Year End Recap
Well, this has been a long year. A lot of personal stuff happened and so did a lot of photography. I had a show at the National Cathedral in May. I have been working on new images all year. I have also updated my equipment — a new Nikon D80, a new computer, a new printer, and converting my old camera to Enhanced Infrared. And I’m already setup for a show in February — check it out at the VA Wine Showcase.

Enhanced Color Infrared
I got my camera back from Life Pixel. I immediately took it out on a morning hike on the W&OD trail in Reston.

I ordered the camera to be converted to what Life Pixel calls Enhanced Color Infrared. What’s interesting is that I can take pictures in the standard infrared or enhanced infrared. Standard infrared gives me an image that turns out white/black/red — where the heat/green comes out white and the cold is black and everything else is red. Enhanced infrared… well, I’m still trying to figure it out. Life Pixel defines it as

Enhanced Color IR (equivalent to 665nm) – Allows more color to pass and is especially suited for color IR work with great saturation and color range. BW also looks quite good although with a bit less contrast without adjustments.

I’m posting some of the images without editing them on my gallery page. Let me know what you think. I am very excited with the new images and can’t wait for everyone’s feedback.

What’s In Store for Next Year
I hope to do more shows, enter into more contests and maybe find a gallery that will show my images. Let’s keep our fingers crossed and I’ll let you know what happens.

More about Portrait Photography and Other Stuff

OK, I know I’m no where near the greatest photographer or blogger. So when I come across a great blog site that has a plethora of information on different to photography topics, I naturally want to share.

Digital Photography School is one of those sites. They have a Digital Photography Tips section that is great. Check out their Portrait Photography Tips. The first one is the same one I wrote about in my last blog.

They also have a great forum and you can sign up for their newsletter — I highly recommend.

How to take Better Portraits

The Digital Photography School has a new series of tutorials about portrait photography. This first tutorial is about perspective, composition, lighting, and several other items. These are all things that you can use for any type of photography.

Take a look at their tutorial: 10 Ways to Take Stunning Portraits

HDR Tutorial

NatureScapes.Net – The High Dynamic Range (HDR) Landscape Photography Tutorial

Ever wonder how to make an HDR photograph? This is a great tutorial. It is a couple of years old, but the lesson still applies.

As photographers we have all had experiences where one shot doesn’t quite get the feel of what’s around us. You can change your exposure, appeture or shutter spead, and it’s still not there. Using HDR allows you to use several images to get that dramatic image.

In this tutorial the photographer uses an image he took of an iced-over lake with large mountains as the background. It was an early morning shot with dramatic sky. He used 3 exposures to create a stunning image that really grabs at you.

I have also created a couple of HDR images. Take a look at my Gallery Site and browse to the Rocky Gap Gallery. There are some very interesting images at the bottom of the gallery that are HDR
